Asia Cup 2023: Focus on Shreyas Iyer during Team India’s optional practice session in Colombo

Xtra Time Web Desk: All eyes were on Shreyas Iyer during Team India’s optional practice session at the R Premadasa stadium on Thursday. The focus was on the star batter as he joined the practice session after recovering fully from his back spasms which kept him out of the Super 4 games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the ongoing Asia Cup.

Shreyas looked to be fine while batting in the nets. At the beginning of the nets, Shreyas was seen doing some exercises for his back which has troubled him in recent times. He looked comfortable during the warm-ups before he went into the nets to bat. Shreyas batted for almost 30 minutes against the medium pacers mostly local net bowlers. He was seen practicing against short balls mostly.

Among the other Indian cricketers who turned up for the optional practice session were Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav.

Jadeja and Shardul too had an extended session in the nets. Key players including Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and captain Rohit Sharma chose to skip the practice to manage their workload.

With a rigorous schedule of three consecutive days of cricket, the team finally had a break on Wednesday but maintained a relaxed approach before the crucial clash against Bangladesh. Workload management remained a priority, resulting in players like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj not participating in net sessions.

On a positive note, Shreyas Iyer, recovering from a back spasm that caused him to miss recent matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, resumed batting practice. While he reported some stiffness and remained under medical observation, his return to the nets in Colombo was encouraging, and reports suggest he looked in good form. Whether he will be fit to play in the Super 4 game against Bangladesh on Friday, it will depend on the physio’s fitness report.
