Rugby World Cup 2023 live scores Australia v Wales, Wallabies team news, start time, stream, final teams

If the Wallabies crash out early from the World Cup and Eddie Jones gets the sack, he won’t have to wait long until he gets another job.

Highly-placed sources have told this masthead that Jones has an open-ended offer to return to Japan, where is hugely respected.

Jones has no intention of going to Japan – even though it is understood he would get paid a lot more money than what he’s getting from Rugby Australia – because he remains committed to helping the Wallabies get back to being the best in the world.

But if he does get fired from the Wallabies, things could change.

Rugby Australia want Jones to stay in charge because they support his vision to rebuild the game and also accept that he’s only been back in the job nine months.

Assistant coach Jason Ryles hopes and expects that Jones will stay, saying that he has a lot to give.

“He hasn‘t said anything to us, obviously, but just basically watch this space,” Ryles said.

“There‘s a big job ahead for the next four years with the Wallabies, which he’s started already, so we’ve got some pretty good foundations down.

“So to walk away from that would be a bit of a surprise I would think because there‘s a lot of green shoots there for the future.”

Former NRL star Ryles has worked with Jones before so has seen up close how he can turn things around.

But he said all the coaches had accepted some responsibility for last weekend’s loss to Wales and were working overtime to do better against Wales.

“Any time you get to represent your country, whether it‘s rugby league, rugby union, or marbles I take it really personally. I understand the magnitude and the size of the World Cup,” Ryles said.

“I’ve been involved in England’s preps to 2019 and a little bit after that as well,” Ryles said.

“To get to work with one of the leading coaches in the world, that’s a huge thing for me personally.

“The criticism back home? Honestly, we are in a good bubble over here.”
