Vikings Add 12 Players to the Practice Squad

The Minnesota Vikings finalized their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday afternoon, giving fans a chance to see who they can expect to play on Sundays this fall.

However, the roster formation process is far from over before Week 1. On Wednesday, teams were able to begin forming their 16-player practice squads. The Vikings added 12 players to their practice, via a team announcement.

All 12 of the additions were releases from Tuesday’s cutdown. After they went unclaimed on waivers, Minnesota was able to bring them back to the team 24 hours later. The practice squad additions include:

  • IOL Alan Ali
  • CB C.J. Coldon
  • DL Sheldon Day
  • WR Lucky Jackson
  • WR Trishton Jackson
  • RB DeWayne McBride
  • DL T.J. Smith
  • WR Thayer Thomas
  • OLB Luiji Vilain
  • OLB Benton Whitley
  • CB Jaylin Williams
  • CB Joejuan Williams

The final name on this list may be the most important heading into the season. Joejuan Williams’ departure on Tuesday was a surprise to many, considering he was one of the very few veteran pieces in Minnesota’s secondary.

His return gives back the Vikings some much-needed depth behind their young CBs Mekhi Blackmon, Andrew Booth, Akayleb Evans, and NaJee Thompson. After being a second-round pick in 2019, Williams has appeared in 36 games at the NFL level.

It is also great to see players like Alan Ali, Sheldon Day, DeWayne McBride, and Luiji Vilain back in Minnesota after being cut on Tuesday. Especially in the case of Vilain, he had a fantastic summer for the Vikings and was a menace during the preseason.

The Vikings now have 14 spots filled on their practice squad after also signing OL Tyrese Robinson and OT Hakeem Adeniji earlier in the day. They have two left before their squad is full.
