Vikings Sign a New RB

Early in the week, the Minnesota Vikings made many moves and trimmed their roster down to 53 players.

Then, early Wednesday morning brought even more roster news as the Vikings signed a new RB in former Miami Dolphin, Myles Gaskin.

The news was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, who tweeted, “RB Myles Gaskin, released yesterday by the Dolphins, is signing today with the Vikings active roster, per source. Agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha confirmed the deal with Minnesota, where Gaskin now will be reuniting with his former HC Brian Flores, the Vikings’ DC.”

Gaskin has spent the four years of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Over the course of his time with the Dolphins, the RB appeared in 38 games and made 17 starts.

In those games, Gaskin totaled 361 carries for 1355 yards and 7 rushing TDs. He also added 101 receptions for 701 yards and 6 receiving TDs. The RB spent his first three seasons playing for current Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores from 2019-2021.

Gaskin didn’t get much of an opportunity in Miami during 2022 as he was buried behind Raheem Mostert, Chase Edmonds, and Jeff Wilson by the end of the season. With the selection of Devon Achane in the 2023 NFL Draft, the veteran became expendable for the Dolphins, thus leading them to cut him yesterday.

Minnesota is depending on Alexander Mattison to be their lead back in 2023, but behind him, they do not have a single RB on the roster that had 10 carries during the 2022 season. Kene Nwangwu got 9, but he will likely focus on special teams more than the offense once again in 2023.

With this addition, the Vikings will need to make another cut in order to get back down to 53 players on their active roster. That move is yet to be announced.
