Vikings Waive Both OL Alan Ali and OLB Luiji Vilain

Teams across the NFL are in the process of trimming their rosters down to 53 players.

The Minnesota Vikings have been hard at work over the past couple days, and Tuesday saw more cuts for the team. The latest cuts are a bit surprising as both OL Alan Ali and OLB Luiji Vilain were waived by the team.

Alec Lewis reported both cuts, tweeting of Vilain, “The #Vikings have waived Luiji Vilain, per a source. A surefire practice squad candidate unless he gets claimed.”

The outside linebacker joined the Vikings in 2022 as an undrafted free agent. He split his collegiate years between Michigan and Wake Forest before joining the Vikings.

Vilain didn’t see any action on defense during his first two seasons of 2017 and 2018, with the Wolverines having plenty of talent at EDGE in Aidan Hutchinson, Josh Uche, and Chase Winovich. He finally saw his first action during the 2019 season, playing 47 snaps. In all, he recorded 7 tackles, including a sack over four games.

In the Covid-shortened 2020 season, Vilain again saw very limited playing time at Michigan. He appeared in five games, appearing in 108 defensive snaps and putting together four tackles.

Finally, in 2021, Vilain decided it was time for he and the Wolverines to part ways. He made the decision to enter the transfer portal and committed to Wake Forest for the fall. In his final opportunity to show NFL teams what he was made of, the EDGE burst onto the scene for the Demon Deacons during that 2021 season. He put together 34 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, and a pair of forced fumbles during his final collegiate season.

This was a rather surprising cut considering the summer that Vilain had. He appeared in all three preseason games this month, recording 4 tackles and a sack along the way. The pass rusher was a menace to opposing QBs throughout the exhibition schedule, totaling 8 QB pressures, per PFF.

He was projected by many (including yours truly) to make the final 53-man roster. However, his release now opens the door for 2023 UDFA Andre Carter to make the team today. Carter was given a massive UDFA contract that included $300,000 in base salary. Hopefully, Minnesota is able to retain Vilain on the practice squad.

Lewis also reported that the Vikings would be moving on from Ali, tweeting, “The #Vikings have waived OL Alan Ali, per a source. Definitive practice squad candidate.” Ali spent his collegiate years at TCU, spending time at all five positions on the offensive line.

With the waiving, Ali can also be claimed by any NFL team over the next 48 hours, but if he clears, the Vikings should make an attempt to bring the offensive lineman back on the practice squad.
